Madelyn's Drive-in is a throwback to an earlier era in island life. There were once over a half dozen of these little take-out places in the Deer Isle area. In fact the predecessor to Madelyn's once sat in a tiny narrow white building across from the current location. My family visited it regularly during my childhood in the 1980s. So, I do have a bit of a nostalgic view of this newest version of Madelyn's, and Zi won't apologize for it. We have visited the new Madelyn's several times over the past few years. While the food has always been good, the latest cooking staff and the dishes they are sending out are the very best yet! The food is flavorful, well prepared, and made with quality ingredients. You can get burgers, dogs, sandwiches, fries, onions rings, and of course, seafood. They also have a yummy assortment of ice cream. My wife and I are vegetarians, and recently visited with seafood loving family and friends. We vegetarians had plenty of options to choose from. I highly recommend the grilled cheese and tomato sandwich. It appeared to have been made on thick homemade bread, was crispy, not greasy, and HUGE! I ordered the onion rings, which were yummy and not greasy at all. I also heard great things about the sweet potato fries. Honestly, the comments in other reviews about high prices are misguided. Yes, the seafood items are pricy, but for goodness sake, you're buying FRESH Deer Isle- Stonington caught fish and shellfish. These items are widely viewed as the world's finest. If you want to enjoy them, pay for them. They are certainly worth it. Madelyn's sells delicious and fresh food. Enjoy!

Ok, first the good: there's a playscape for your kids. After that, it is all downhill. My son ordered a cheeseburger and my daughter and I ordered clam chowder. He brought the food over and she and I took the lids off our chowder and gasped. "What is that?" she asked. "I really don't know" I replied. Apparently milk is one ingredient madelyn's does not use in their chowder, unlike most others. I'm not sure if the material floating on top of a clump of potatoes was butter or medium weight oil. I had one bite and both of us ditched the chowder. I rarely use the word 'disgusting', but their chowder was. Ick.

Get: Haddock Sandwich Madeyln's is one of the many spots in the region where you can score some tasty ocean treats including my Maine stand-by: the Haddock Sandwich. The flavor was good, the serving size was generous, and the location itself offered some R&R for the kids who suddenly decided that being in a car is the worst idea ever. The expansive lot is full of outdoor seating, a playground, and some patches of grass to hunker down on if you're so inclined. And if you're excessively masochistic, you can amp up the family with a wide variety of sweet frozen goodies. These positives are contrasted by some negatives including some steeper pricing for some seafood items, and a somewhat confusing ordering window/system. Certainly these things are navigable and I did so in humbly impressive fashion (not really) and ultimately didn't detract from the food quality and exprience. Positives: Location, location, location + good serving sizes Negatives: ordering system could better cater to idiots like me, some pricier items.

Madelyn's is one of those old school New England seasonal seafood shacks. You order at window and eat at a picnic table. The food is all fried and deliciously greasy. The table will be sticky and there will probably be flies. But this sort of place has my childhood nostalgia all over it. I love a bit of deep fried cod/haddock, clams, scallops, fries and onion rings. No, it's not health food. It's New England comfort food.

Great quality and prices! You certainly get what you pay for! Lobster is fresh fresh fresh! Best steak and cheese around too! Heaping portions of onion rings and fries. Couldn't get better than this!

A family drive in lunch and supper eatery open in summer only with picnic tables and take out, also ice cream. Similar to Bagaduce Lunch in Penobscot and The Fish Net in Blue Hill, featuring burgers, and fried fish including lobster, clam and shrimp rolls along with haddock sandwiches and other sandwiches. Not many side dishes besides potatoes and cole slaw. Eat in car or at picnic tables outside. Can be buggy. Pleasant staff. Relatively fast service. Family friendly, with a playground for kids. The fish is expensive; the rest is average. Food is satisfactory of its kind. Does not accept credit cards. Locals and tourists are the clientele.

Fried haddock sandwich "burger" was great! Lightly fried and generous fresh fish!

Playground for the kids, very clean, nice outdoor seating, good island fare. One of the only places to get fried clams on Deer Isle. Not greasy batter. We like this place better than Fisherman's Friend. Veggie burgers for the vegetarians, good kids meals with healthy sides options. Definitely family friendly. Oh, and free wifi!! A big bonus because wifi and phone service is very spotty on the Isle.

My husband and I happened upon Madelyn's and luckily I did not have access to the earlier review. We had an excellent haddock chowder - it was milky, not thick. The onion rings are home made, is as the bread. There is no indoor seating and they don't take credit cards. However, the prices are very reasonable and the service was prompt and courteous. We would happily return if we were in the area again.
